This month on the toccoa we are getting some great numbers on dry flies. Still a little bit of sulfur action but also very tiny tan caddis. On the river they haven’t all the way keyed in on terrestrials like they are on the creeks. Despite the rain the creeks are very low and a lot of lower elevation creeks are just too warm. If you do find cold water though, throw an AJ’s beetle or a black PMX those have been working the best on the creeks. As far as the toccoa, stick to elk hair caddis in the smaller sizes as well as sulfur comparaduns.
As far as the warm water fisheries, they are pretty low. Stick to topwater mostly when targeting bass. Throw boogle bugs, stealth bombers, and MFC poppers. (Chubbies and hoppers will work for redeyes). It’s that time of year when dog day cicadas will be clumsily falling into the water. Remember with poppers “less is more” as far as putting action to the fly goes. Bigger fish will slowly rise to a fly imitating a bigger bug sense they are pretty much defenseless once they hit the water. Striper are still in the river systems use baitfish patterns and fish the faster more oxygenated runs. Early bird gets the worm is very true this time of year!
